Green Success Stories

Gee, Thanks – Tales of (Green) Thanksgiving Woe

Green Success Stories has a lot to be thankful for, especially when we see how many people are doing great things in the fight against climate change. But as Thanksgiving approaches, there’s some sadness in the air. So we present a few sad Thanksgiving truths and what to do about them.

No, we can’t just talk about kittens. We can’t NOT talk about the climate catastrophe we’re hurtling towards if we don’t do something fast. Yeah, it can be tough, but the key is to frame it on common experience and common benefits. Speak of everyone someone knows affected by extreme weather. Speak of the independence of solar energy. Speak of savings and profits. If sustainability gets people up in arms, call it efficiency. If you must, speak of kittens suffering in hurricanes. But speak about it.

When it comes down to it, somewhere deep deep inside, we probably recognize that turkeys are indeed thinking, feeling, sentient beings. And if we gave one some individuality, gave it a name, called it a pet, got to know it a little more – we might see it as more than a stupid carcass to be cooked. And when we see how turkeys are abused at factory farms –debeaked, macerated, immobilized by their own weight, crammed together, boiled alive – kind of wants to make you throw up before the meal. Not to mention the environmental and health costs of factory farms. But, still, Carnivores R (many of) Us, and Turkey tastes good, so at least if we must, find someone who gives the bird a life before its death.

Turkey tastes good. Its substitutes? Well…

This is just gluttony. That’s all you can call it.

And here’s a happy truth on Thanksgiving.

Even with the upcoming change in US administration, more and more people are doing the work of fixing things. Recent data shows that climate work continues to grow:

More and more people are taking the heroic journey to save the world from climate change. And Green Success Stories is proud to highlight them and thank them.

(And feel free to thank us for doing so too!)

Happy Thanksgiving!
