Meet Stefanie Sekich-Quinn at the Surfrider Foundation

Being based in San Diego, surfing is a huge part of the lifestyle and culture here. Thankfully, people like Stefanie Sekich-Quinn and the Surfrider Foundation are working hard to protect and enjoyment of the world’s ocean, waves and beaches. Stefanie, thanks for being here!

Tell us a little bit about you and your background:
I have been paying my bills as an environmental advocate since 1995 when I canvassed for Greenpeace in college. I have been working on climate change for nearly 10 years. Currently I assist the Surfrider chapter network to implement effective advocacy efforts at the local, state and federal levels to influence agencies and elected officials to protect coastal resources and to plan for climate change impacts.

What is a fun fact about you?
At one point in my career I needed to supplement my salary so I became a yoga instructor.

What was your motivation to get into this industry?
I grew up as an outdoorsy kid in Colorado. My freshman year of college though an environmental studies course I found my calling to help protect nature and the planet. After many years of doing advocacy, I realized I love law and policy and went back to school to hone my advocacy work so I could better influence outcomes.

Why do you think climate change/sustainability is such an important topic today?
If we ignore climate change, it will wipe us out. We have to act now and be proactive to avoid dire consequence. I have an 8 year old daughter and I want to help her future be strong and resilient.

What do you envision your industry looking like 10 years from now?
I pray daily that renewable energy takes off and we begin to solve our climate crisis. I see the younger generation owning the problem and doing all they can to avert peril.

What can the average person do to make a difference?
Do the small stuff! Turn off lights and appliances, try to not drive as much, avoid plastic made from petroleum, eat less meat, buy fuel efficient cars, VOTE for good climate candidates. Take it to the next level by following local environmental issues in your community and write letters and testify before decision makers to ensure better environmental and climate protection.

What positive changes are you seeing?
The younger kids. I love seeing they rally around school strikes. they are all so articulate and motivated.
