This week we had the opportunity to connect with Nick Balster of Dalkia, a leader in energy services, providing innovative solutions to support the sustainable growth of cities and businesses.

Dalkia offers its clients proven expertise in developing, constructing and operating greener and more economical energy systems. From demand side management and optimized energy distribution to decentralized production using local resources. Dalkia is involved in every step of the energy chain, to improve performance.

Let’s learn more from Nick about how companies like Dalkia use a sustainable mindset to improve energy systems!

Tell us a little bit about you and your background:

I’m married with three children and live outside of Boston. I’ve been a part of the energy transition for over a decade, in business and corporate development roles. The industry suits my personality well because I’m a problem solver and am also interested in climate change and its impacts.

As Dalkia expands it energy services business throughout the US, my work focuses on developing and executing a strategy that creates sustainable growth. Throughout my career I’ve aimed to clarify and execute long-term visions by building pragmatic, step-by-step processes. My early training was as an engineer, and so I naturally look to take a process-driven approach that focuses on the end goal and works to drive towards it.

This is incredibly important at the intersection of energy-generation and sustainability. The future presents large challenges as we look to scale energy production in a way that minimizes its impact on the environment. And I’m inspired by the opportunities to take the broad challenges facing us and spotlight those actions that we can take right now. I want to make sure the legacy we leave for our children is one that we can be proud of.

What is a fun fact about you?

I’ve ridden 192 miles on a bicycle in a day, twice.

Why do you think climate change and sustainability is such an important topic today?

The impacts of climate change are irrefutable in my opinion; they’re real and can be devastating to mankind. So in order to avoid catastrophic events caused by our processes we have to re-engineer them, think differently about consumption, and learn to live in balance with the planet. This is the great challenge of our time.

What do you envision your industry looking like 10 years from now?

Twice the number of people are employed in the energy transition to keep up with demand, renewables and energy storage continue their blistering pace, energy efficiency is standard throughout all buildings, and utility incentives are nearly ubiquitous across the US.

What can the average person do to make a difference?

Change out all your light bulbs to LED.
