Eliminating Disposable Battery Waste Using Indoor Photovoltaics

Green Success Stories puts Yousef Farraj, CEO and co-Founder of SOLRA-PV, in The Green Spotlight. Yousef describes the hazardous waste and environmental impact of society’s widespread reliance on disposable batteries in IoT devices. The company aims to change all that via its indoor photovoltaic panel that harnesses artificial light and generates power for wireless devices, such as in the field of IoT and consumer electronics. Yousef sees a future in which self-powered electronics will be the norm, and GreenEnergy Corners will fill electronics stores.

Tell us a bit about your sustainability journey.

At SOLRA-PV, our sustainability journey began with a simple yet critical realization: the widespread reliance on disposable batteries in IoT devices is not only costly but also environmentally unsustainable. Billions of batteries are discarded annually, contributing to hazardous waste and resource depletion.

Our solution is an indoor photovoltaic panel designed to harvest artificial light and generate power for wireless sensors and low-energy devices. By eliminating the need for disposable batteries, we significantly reduce electronic waste and lower the carbon footprint of industrial and smart building applications.

Beyond our product, we envision a broader impact on sustainable electronics. We aim to establish GreenEnergy Corners in electronics stores, where consumers can easily find photovoltaic-powered and sustainable electronic devices—just like organic goods are highlighted in supermarkets.

Our journey has been recognized through awards like 1st place at Climate Launchpad Israel 2024, and we are honored to be part of the Israel delegation to COP29, where we continue advocating for sustainable energy solutions in the global arena.

Co-Founders: Dr. Yousef Farraj, Dr. Bat-El Cohen Wiezel, and Prof. Lioz Etgar

Tell us a bit about the product or solution you offer.

SOLRA-PV is a customizable indoor photovoltaic panel available in sizes of up to 10 X10 cm2. Designed for integration into wireless devices, it enables true wireless operation by eliminating the need for disposable batteries. This reduces maintenance costs and ensures continuous device functionality.

For industries relying on battery-powered IoT sensors—such as smart buildings, industrial automation, and predictive maintenance—battery failures can lead to unexpected downtime, impacting productivity and costs. Machinery downtime alone can amount to 11% of a company’s yearly turnover.

Share a green success story with us – how have you helped customers or other businesses in the fight against climate change?

While we are still in the R&D stage, our customer discovery process revealed that IoT manufacturers are actively seeking a green solution to make their battery-powered wireless devices maintenance-free.

What would you do with $1 billion dollars?

With $1 billion in funding, SOLRA-PV would scale globally, making self-powered electronics the norm. We’d mass-produce our panels, enhance R&D, forge strategic partnerships, and launch the “GreenEnergy Corner” in stores.

What do you envision your industry looking like in ten years?

In ten years, self-powered electronics will be the norm, eliminating disposable batteries in IoT devices. Indoor photovoltaics (PV) will seamlessly power sensors, wearables, and smart devices, making them maintenance-free.

What would you like readers to take away from this article?

We want readers to understand the importance of finding alternatives to disposable batteries and the value of utilizing sustainable solutions that are more cost-effective in the long run. By moving away from battery-dependent devices, we can significantly reduce electronic waste, improve energy efficiency, and lower maintenance costs.
