What’s a Green Case Study?
A green case study, also known as a green success story, is a magazine-like article featuring your green product or service saving the day for a featured customer. The customer faces a challenge (that readers identify with), struggles to find a solution and discovers yours – AND YOU SAVE THE DAY.
People remember stories. They identify with the customer and see you as the hero. It’s human. It’s real. It’s not fake or pushy or smarmy advertising. It’s a true story. People remember stories.

Do they have a certain structure?
- Scene One: Customer A has a problem. She looks for a solution.
- Scene Two: Customer A is introduced to a new product by Your Company. Hopeful, but cautious, she decides to give it a try.
- Scene Three: Happy ending! The product from Your Company works like a charm. Customer A is delighted. It solves all her problems. She raves about it.
All this plays out in an engaging fashion, describing the real issue at hand in a realistic way, shows you “going the extra mile” and includes some data points and images that hammer the point home.
The reader identifies with Customer A’s story, sees you as the hero in this story, and remembers the message (and acts on it).

- Give it to sales. Salespeople love case studies. They use them in presentations, to illustrate key points and as testimonials. A case study is often more convincing than a brochure.
- Post it on your website. Want to improve traffic to your site? Adding new, valuable content is a proven strategy. A case study certainly qualifies.
- Use it as a story in your newsletter or email list. Success stories based on real-world applications get the highest readership in company newsletters and ezines.
- Use it as a speaking topic. When an executive needs to give a talk at a meeting or conference, a case study makes an excellent presentation. The content can easily be converted into PowerPoint slides. The printed case study itself can be used as a handout.
- Use it in lead-generation programs. A case study makes a terrific free giveaway in an ad, email, direct mailer and on a website. In direct marketing, we call this strategy an Information Premium. It works!
