How To Reduce the Amount of Energy You Use Each Day

Being a green person is important to many people, but not many of us are mindful about our energy consumption. We’re always trying to do more with less and make better use of resources, so we tend to use the same amount of energy that we did five years ago. But that’s not the way it should be! You can reduce your energy consumption by 40% with some easy changes.

Controlling your energy consumption

What can you do? There are a couple of things you can do to reduce your energy consumption. But if you’re not ready to change your lifestyle completely, it’s OK to make some minor adjustments. Adjust your thermostat: Every time you raise or lower your thermostat, you reduce the amount of energy you use, but the change also impacts the temperature of the home. Changing the thermostat by just one degree is enough to cause your energy consumption to decrease, and if you turn down the heat a little, you’re already at 50% savings! You can save up to 4,500 kilowatt hours of energy every year.

Energy saving tips

The first tip is to make sure your gadgets are on a low energy or energy saving setting (default off on phones, iPad, etc.). That’s the easiest one to remember. Don’t leave appliances or lights switched on unnecessarily. If you have to, turn them off. Take shorter showers, use the lowest flow shower heads, and turn off the tap while brushing your teeth. Turn your home lights off when not in use. You can also unplug them when not in use. Cut down on electricity when not at home. Don’t keep on top of switching off your appliances when you go out or when you are out for a few hours. How to decrease your electricity bill? Unplug all electrical appliances when not in use. You can also unplug your laptop before you leave your home.

Some easy changes that you can make today

Get Energy Saving Lightbulbs: Energy-saving lightbulbs are usually on sale in many stores right now. Switching from the traditional incandescent bulbs to the new energy-saving LEDs is a great way to reduce the amount of energy you consume. They use 90% less energy than incandescent bulbs and can save you up to 50% of your energy costs in the long run. Invest in Compact Fluorescent Lights: During the day, these bulbs offer a warmer light than compact fluorescent lights, but at night they shine just as bright as incandescent lights. The advantage of CFLs is that they use up to 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs. Compact fluorescent lights are available at most big stores and you can save up to 80% of your energy costs.

Conclusion

Choosing energy efficient products is a great way to reduce your energy consumption and, at the same time, reduce your carbon footprint. This doesn’t just apply to appliances either, because changing your lights to high energy efficient ones can also reduce your carbon footprint! You’ll see a big difference in your home, because energy efficient homes use 50% less energy.
