Green Success Stories sat down with John Hoffman, Co-CEO of SunGreen Systems, Inc. John describes his path from a coal mining locale to leadership of a major commercial solar engineering, procurement and construction firm in Southern California. He shares how high-quality, sustainable energy systems help businesses reduce their carbon footprint, achieve energy independence, and contribute to a greener future.
Tell us a bit about your sustainability journey.
I began my career in solar in 2008, but my interest in sustainability dates back much further. Growing up in Western Kentucky, surrounded by coal mining, I became acutely aware of the environmental impact of traditional energy sources. When I was first introduced to solar technology in the late ’90s, I was immediately intrigued by its potential to revolutionize how we generate energy sustainably.
Starting as a sales representative, I worked my way up and currently serve as Co-CEO of SunGreen Systems, a leading commercial solar EPC in Southern California. Throughout my journey, I’ve been driven by a passion for sustainable energy and a deep commitment to mitigating our impact on global warming.
Beyond my professional life, I’m an avid lover of the outdoors and deeply value nature’s beauty. I strive to instill a sense of responsibility to preserve it for future generations. I believe renewable energy is key to protecting our planet, and I’m proud to be part of the effort to create a greener, more sustainable world.
Tell us a bit about the product or solution you offer.

One of our most innovative and challenging projects was for J+R Group at the Morgan Stanley Building in Irvine, California. The building lacked roof space for solar panels, so we designed and constructed a unique elevated carport system atop their parking garage.
When we first submitted plans to the City of Irvine, they initially deemed the project infeasible. However, through meticulous design and engineering, we developed a system that satisfied all city requirements. This achievement was particularly notable given the tight timeframe set by the client.
The final installation included a 404kW solar PV system with 1,468 Mitsubishi modules and integrated Tesla energy storage (330kW/660kWh). This system offsets 40% of the building’s energy use and reduces demand by 30%, preventing 1,057 tons of CO? emissions in its first year alone.
This project not only demonstrates our technical expertise and commitment to overcoming challenges but also highlights how innovative solutions can drive meaningful progress in the fight against climate change.
What would you do with $1 billion dollars?
If I had $1 billion dollars, I would focus on creating a lasting, positive impact on the environment and society. A significant portion would be dedicated to advancing renewable energy adoption, particularly in underserved communities and regions impacted by industrial activities.
Growing up in Western Kentucky, I witnessed firsthand the environmental devastation caused by strip mining. I would allocate funds to reclaim and restore these sites, transforming them into opportunities for renewable energy generation. By installing ground-mounted solar systems on former mining land, we could provide clean, sustainable energy to local communities that have been economically and environmentally impacted by the decline of coal mining.
Additionally, I’d focus on ensuring that rivers and streams in these areas are clean and free of lead and other mining contaminants. Restoring water quality is essential to the health and well-being of these communities, as well as to the preservation of local ecosystems.
Beyond these efforts, I’d invest in research and development for cutting-edge climate technologies, such as next-generation solar panels and carbon capture solutions, and support environmental education to inspire the next generation of sustainability leaders.
On a personal level, I’d use the opportunity to expand SunGreen Systems’ reach, helping more businesses and organizations transition to renewable energy. For me, it’s about repairing the damage of the past, driving innovation for the future, and ensuring a cleaner, healthier planet for generations to come.
What do you envision your industry looking like in ten years?
In ten years, renewable energy will dominate the global energy landscape, with solar, energy storage, and EV charging fully integrated into daily life. Solar technology will be more efficient, affordable, and versatile, with innovations like building-integrated photovoltaics and agrivoltaics becoming mainstream.
Energy independence will grow through microgrids and decentralized systems, and repurposing land—such as strip mines and industrial sites—for renewable energy will be common. Advanced storage solutions will ensure renewables provide reliable, round-the-clock power.
The industry will create thousands of green jobs and drive significant progress toward net-zero goals. SunGreen Systems will continue leading this transformation, delivering innovative solutions and helping businesses and communities embrace a sustainable future.
