Person of the Week: Bill Nussey, author of Freeing Energy

As our energy grid shifts to embracing renewable energy and adopting decentralized networks, local-scale solar and batteries will play a huge part in this disruption. What will that future look like? How will it impact us as energy consumers? Why should we start thinking about these changes in global energy sources?

Meet Bill Nussey, author of a new book called Freeing Energy; a book about the future of our energy grid; a book that will help answer some of these questions.

Tell us a little bit about you and your background:

I am a 25-year tech CEO with several exits, including an IPO. Along the way, I also worked as a VC at Greylock and even served as IBM’s VP Strategy out of their HQ after I sold my company to them. In 2017, I jumped into clean energy. In particular, I have a TED talk, a popular podcast, 100+ articles and, as of Dec 2021, a book called Freeing Energy — all focused on the distributed generation of electricity, or what I call “local energy.”

What is a fun fact about you?

I climbed a 300 foot ladder to the top of a wind turbine to interview someone up there.

Why do you think climate change and sustainability is such an important topic today?

Beyond the urgency of reducing greenhouse gases, clean energy and sustainable living represent one of the biggest business opportunities of our generation.

What do you envision your industry looking like 10 years from now?

The debate over clean energy will be over. Solar and storage will be the clear leader, although wind and geothermal will play substantial roles. The biggest surprise will be the extent to which small-scale systems, like rooftop solar, play an outsized role in this future clean energy system.

What can the average person do to make a difference?

This is the same question I ask every guest on my podcast and a core focus of my book. For people who can afford it, they can install solar, buy into community solar, drive an EV, and of course use energy efficient appliances and lighting. But the most important thing they can do is get educated, separate facts from myths, and share what they know with policymakers.
