Meet Green Success Stories’s Person of the Week: Tatiana Gomez!

As the Founder and CEO of Ceres Market, Tatiana is a motivated and passionate leader who provides sustainable consumer options and reduces pollution. Ceres is an online marketplace that offers products and solutions for living a zero-waste lifestyle. Through the principles of reduce, reuse, and repair, Ceres Market empowers individuals to embrace an inclusive and circular economy.

Tell us a little bit about you and your background:

I’m first generation American of Colombian decent and I’d say that my upbringing played a big part in how I saw the world when comparing Colombia to other cultures, especially around sustainability. I spent most of my professional career in sales, customer services, and social impact while feeding my passion for sustainability by joining environmentally focused employee resources groups at the company’s I have worked for. As a social and environmental advocate, I started a Public Benefit Corporation focused on bringing the refill, re-use, and repair circular models to grocery and retail through Ceres Market.

What is a fun fact about you?

I have participated in the North Face Challenge Marathon at Bear Moutain in New York and aspire to compete in a triathlon someday.

Why do you think climate change and sustainability is such an important topic today?

Have you watched Don’t Look Up with Leonardo DiCaprio? The movie is based on the fact that us humans tend to ignore scientific data. We have one planet and must take care of this one before we go looking for another one to destroy. For so many years, we have looked the other way when it comes to climate change, and we cannot keep doing this… it’s blowing up in our faces at this point.

What do you envision your industry looking like 10 years from now?

Grocery and retail are going to play a big part in helping people make ethical and sustainable choices. The sum of the choices we make in our lifetimes can make a big impact. Retail will eventually catch up to the innovation needed to help people make better choices. This could be through technology, eco-friendly product offerings, and reduce/re-use/repair business models.

What can the average person do to make a difference?

My rule of five include: 1) Stop purchasing plastic bags and use reusable bags. 2) Carry utensils, a water bottle and a coffee cup. 3) Avoid animal products. 4) Use renewal energy (solar, wind, rain, tides, or geothermal). 5) Recycle and compost.
