If you’re a baseball fan, one of the most viscerally wonderful feelings is entering the stadium and seeing the beautiful green expanse of the field in front of you. It’s the feeling of promise of great plays, great fun, and a great future – even if it’s just for today’s game.
Combine that beautiful green with the beauty of sustainable green efforts, and you’ve got even more reason to enjoy what baseball has to offer.
As Major League Baseball (MLB) kicks off the 2025 season, several sustainability initiatives are taking centerfield, er, center stage:
- MLB and WM Partnership: MLB has announced WM (formerly Waste Management) as its first Official Sustainability Partner. This collaboration aims to enhance eco-friendly practices across ballparks and communities, with WM providing advisory services on waste reduction, greenhouse gas emissions management, and more.
- Earth Day and Green Week Celebrations: WM will serve as the presenting sponsor for MLB’s Earth Day and Green Week events. These celebrations will feature various environmentally positive practices and messaging, reinforcing MLB’s commitment to sustainability.
- Ballpark Energy Efficiency Upgrades: Teams are investing in energy-efficient technologies. For instance, some ballparks are installing new energy-efficient LED tower lights, which produce higher-quality output while reducing the ballpark’s overall electric footprint.
- Expansion of Food Donation Programs: MLB clubs are expanding food donation initiatives to combat waste and support local communities. As of February 2025, 21 teams have active food donation programs, redirecting surplus food to those in need.
- Solar Power Integration: A growing number of ballparks are harnessing solar energy to power their facilities. Currently, 10 ballparks utilize solar power, reducing reliance on non-renewable energy sources and lowering carbon emissions.
While you applaud for your favorite team, Green Success Stories invites you to also cheer for MLB’s green efforts. Baseball and Sustainability – they make a great combination.
