In the past few years, a lot of people have been moving into new homes. Whether you’re graduating from college and getting your first apartment, or buying a house with your spouse, there are many things to take care of before moving in. To help you out, we compiled a list of some things that everyone should consider before they move into their new home!
Understand where toxic chemicals might be
Imagine moving into an older home, built in the 50’s or 60’s. It is charming, affordable, and close to good schools – but about a week into your new life, your youngest child gets ill. Your mind starts jumping to conclusions as you consider what could be causing their itchy throat and sudden cough.
Volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, are chemicals that are often found in carpeting, paint, insulation, and hard surface flooring. The list of household products that may contain VOCs is extensive, as shown by the EPA:
- paints, paint strippers and other solvents
- wood preservatives
- aerosol sprays
- cleansers and disinfectants
- moth repellents and air fresheners
- stored fuels and automotive products
- hobby supplies
- dry-cleaned clothing
- pesticide
Fortunately, inspectors are becoming more aware of VOCs, and it is always possible to check with your realtor about this concern. Asbestos is another culprit that has often been found in roofing or insulation, however, you can buy a test kit and also check with the seller about previous tests.
If you are moving into a new home, it is important to do your research to understand if you and your family are at risk – learn more about reducing exposure by reaching out to a local consultant, or doing some simple online investigation. If you believe your home may have mold, you can buy an affordable test kit online or many local businesses.
Clean your house before you move in
This might sound strange, but it’s important to clean your house before you move in. You’re going to be living in a new place with your family and it’s important to make it feel like home! Often this cleaning is done prior to the sale – but if not, opt in for organic and sustainable cleaning supplies, to avoid putting more chemicals into your home.
It is important to invest in these cleaning supplies to get started – they last a long time and there are a number of environmentally-friendly cleaning products out there! Fortunately, there are many options that are also affordable – so you don’t need to spend a lot of money on new supplies.
Your exteriors should be clean and neat, in order to avoid weathering or poor insulation. When dealing with things like your roof, gutters, and light fixtures, it is sometimes best to call in an expert. Not only will these upgrades make your home look better, but it also will make you feel safer.
Sustainable Furniture and Appliances
Although I’m a big fan of matching furniture, sometimes it makes the most sense to buy second-hand for things like desks, tables, or book shelves. It saves trees and brings more character into the home!
Make sure to put the bed frame and headboard together – it elevates you off the floor and keeps you away from direct wall exposure. If your child has allergies, then the bedding should be changed and the mattress should be clean. It is important to consider organic, natural mattresses if you are making a new purchase for bedding.
Before you move in, make sure you have all of the basic home goods you need. You need to make sure that your kitchen is fully stocked and that you have an oven, a stove, and a refrigerator. If you don’t have these things, you can get them through any local store or online marketplace. Consider energy efficient appliances when setting up for the next few years!
