Transforming Farmers’ Waste into Protein to Feed the World

Green Success Stories sat down with Daniel Rejzner, Co-Founder and CEO of Day 8, a growing company dedicated to nourishing humanity by upcycling discarded agricultural biomass and producing sustainable, high-quality Rubisco protein. He points out that using existing agricultural byproducts is great for the environment, eliminating the need for additional farmland, water, or livestock. It’s likewise great for the economy and our health. Daniel’s vision is to transform every farmer’s waste into the foundational building block of the future food industry.

Tell us a bit about your sustainability journey.

I have a background in physics and a career in tech, with extensive experience in entrepreneurship and selling to food brands. I founded three companies in the food space, with my previous ventures focusing on sales and marketing solutions for food brands.

My last company developed a platform for launching food brands at retail, achieving profitability, sales in 15 global markets, and major clients such as Kroger, P&G, and Nielsen.

Through this work, I gained deep insights into the challenges of plant-based product launches and recognized the urgent need for better ingredients—leading me to found Day 8 to solve this problem.

Tell us a bit about the product or solution you offer.

Day 8 is on a mission to nourish humanity by upcycling discarded agricultural biomass and producing sustainable, high-quality Rubisco protein, the future building block of the food industry.

Day 8 has successfully demonstrated its ability to create a highly functional, taste-neutral protein that outperforms existing ingredients like soy and pea protein.

This breakthrough has generated incredible industry interest from 30 industry partners, including companies such as Danone and Puratos.

By using existing agricultural byproducts, we eliminate the need for additional farmland, water, or livestock, dramatically reducing the environmental impact of feeding the world.

Our vision is to transform every farmer’s waste into the foundational building block of the future food industry!

Share a green success story with us – how have you helped customers or other businesses in the fight against climate change?

We’re creating a win-win situation for growers, food organizations, consumers, and the planet.

  • By upcycling existing agricultural biomass, we open up a new revenue stream for growers, helping them increase profitability per hectar.
  • Food organizations finally get a scalable, cost-effective alt. protein that they have been desperately waiting for.
  • Consumers get a healthy, natural and nutritious ingredient in their food.
  • By producing more food from existing farmland we mitigate de-forestation and biodiversity loss.
Co-founders Daniel & Dana in the field (literally)

What would you do with $1 billion dollars?

Use it to scale up Rubisco production and market penetration globally. The remaining funds would be invested back into educating the next generation on connecting with and conserving nature.

What do you envision your industry looking like in ten years?

In a decade, we will all be eating Rubisco protein as part of a wide variety of food products, creating a healthy and delicious future all while conserving Earth’s resources.
