Decentralized Power with Alistair Monro

Going Green had the chance to sit down with Alistair Monro, the Founder and CEO of Ryse Energy. Ryse Energy is a global leader in decentralized power generation using small wind turbines either as a stand alone technology or integrated with solar PV and energy storage and a solutions provider. With offices worldwide we look to support sustainable energy projects with best in class technology tailored to suit local conditions for reliable performance. We took a moment to discuss decentralized power Alistair Monro.

Tell us a little bit about you and your background:

Started my career in the water sector until I moved from the UK to the United Arab Emirates in the 1980s where I got involved in the energy sector through combined power and water facilities. Since 1985 I have been focused on power and water infrastructure. Both technical and commercial I have worked for multinational corporations and done several successful start ups in the chemistry and engineering sectors.

What is a fun fact about you?

Until I started work in 1982 I was a full time athlete and won a gold medal at the 1981 Canoe Slalom World Championships. For my 60th birthday I kayaked and rafted the grand canyon.

What was your motivation to get into this industry?

A combination of the commercial opportunity but being able to deliver electricity to people with no access to power is a great motivator.

Watch to learn more about Ryse Enegy.

Why do you think climate change/sustainability is such an important topic today?

Social conscience has been stimulated and many people now want to make positive changes.

What do you envision your industry looking like 10 years from now?

Decentralized power generation will be much more the norm for many countries. Where renewable energy can be applied it will be installed by choice leading to a larger market opportunity for companies committed to the space.

What can the average person do to make a difference?

Think more and behave differently.

What positive changes are you seeing?

Reduced travel. One use plastic being socially unacceptable. Widespread displacement of hydrocarbons with renewable energy.
