Green.org sat down with Tané Minnick, Chair and CEO Advisory Board of Vistage Worldwide, Inc. to learn how she has built a career in investing in the next generation of leaders.
Tell us a little bit about your background.
Born in Japan, grew up in the mountains in Geneva and traveled to 11 countries by the time I was 11 – the trend has slowed a bit but meeting new people and cultures remains a passion of mine. I’ve spent my career primarily in the outdoor industry innovating new businesses and transforming tired ones. My business is the one of ‘possibility’ – I’m always looking for what is possible. I got to work for some of the greatest global brands (Patagonia, UGG, TOMS, Merrell) and now, I get to coach some of the greatest incoming leaders and chair CEO peer groups in partnership with Vistage. Our greatest hope for a sustainable future is investing in the next generation of leaders.
While my previous role allowed me to contribute to organizational growth and change on a large scale, I realized that the true catalyst for transformation often lies within the leaders themselves. As an executive coach, I’ve found immense fulfillment in helping individuals tap into their potential, refine their leadership skills, and navigate the complexities of today’s business landscape. It’s a journey of personal and professional growth that not only empowers leaders to drive innovation within their organizations but also enables them to lead with greater empathy, authenticity, and resilience. This shift has allowed me to witness the profound impact that individual transformation can have on the broader corporate landscape, and it aligns perfectly with my passion for catalyzing positive transformation on a more personal level.
What would you do with $1 billion dollars?
Give mom whatever she wants (she doesn’t want much – but she deserves the world). Then… Establish a 5013C leadership coaching foundation that could support all the unsung leaders in the world. We need sustainable leadership to support our journey into the future. By operating as a non-profit, the primary focus remains on the betterment of individuals and communities rather than profit generation. This not only aligns with a mission of promoting ethical and effective leadership but also encourages a commitment to serving a sustainable future. In an era marked by complex challenges and the need for exemplary leadership in many, if not all, sectors, a 501(c)(3) leadership coaching organization can play a pivotal role in nurturing the next generation of leaders who will drive positive transformation and innovation globally.
Why do you think sustainability is such an important topic today?
Sustainability is an immensely crucial topic today, and its significance is underscored by the United Nations’ definition of sustainability, which centers on meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. In the face of pressing global challenges like climate change, resource depletion, and social inequality, sustainable leadership has emerged as a vital framework for addressing these issues comprehensively. Firstly, sustainable leadership recognizes that businesses and organizations play a pivotal role in shaping the world’s future. Leaders who prioritize ethical leadership not only reduce their environmental footprint but also foster innovation, resilience, and long-term success. Secondly, the UN’s definition of sustainability highlights the intergenerational dimension of this concept. Sustainable leadership acknowledges that today’s decisions and actions have profound consequences for future generations.
Leaders who embrace ethical ethical values are forward-thinking and prioritize the development of policies, practices, and technologies that will ensure a better world for their children and grandchildren.

This long-term perspective is critical in addressing complex global challenges and securing a prosperous and equitable future for all. Lastly, sustainability is important today because it transcends borders and ideologies. It provides a unifying framework for global cooperation and collective action. Sustainable leadership calls for collaboration among governments, businesses, civil society, and individuals to achieve common goals. In a world facing unprecedented global challenges, sustainability offers a pathway to find common ground and work together towards a more equitable, peaceful and environmentally sound future.
What do you envision your industry looking like in ten years?
My first industry (CPG/Retail) is changing on a massive scale now (don’t blink) and it will continue to evolve even quicker in the future. Who knows, will we even need clothes in 10 years? Yikes! However, it is my sincerest hope that my second chapter industry, coaching, will continue to grow – everyone deserves to have an unbiased strategic thought partner who is challenging, championing and advocating 100% for them. In our rapidly evolving world, the pace of change seems to accelerate by the day, to the point where we now rely on watches and reminders to keep track of our schedules and tasks. Science tells us that amidst this constant hustle, taking regular breaks and gaining perspective with a coach is not just a luxury but a necessity. It’s especially critical for leaders who are at the forefront of decision-making and innovation. These conversations with coaches provide a mental reset, allowing leaders to recharge, refocus, and foster creativity. In a world where burnout and information overload are prevalent, acknowledging the importance of coaching not only ensures leaders’ well-being but also enhances their ability to make informed and strategic decisions that will shape the future.
