Uniting Arizona’s Climate Community Around Clean Technology

Green Success Stories sat down with Dr. Sotiria Anagnostou, Board Director of AZ CleanTech. We discussed her mission to make corporations more sustainable, her excitement at heading Arizona’s first platform uniting the entire climate community, and her vision for a future surge in clean technology.

Tell us a bit about your sustainability journey.

My journey in sustainability began during my freshman year of college, sparked by a semester-long Outward Bound course. Spending three months outdoors, I was immersed in environmental issues and witnessed firsthand the intersection of corporations and the environment. This experience crystalized my mission to drive corporate sustainability and minimize environmental impact.

After earning a BA in Environmental Studies and Political Science from Marietta College, and an MA in Energy and Environmental Analysis from Boston University, I pursued a PhD at Arizona State University, where I developed a deep connection with the state. Arizona’s vibrant enthusiasm for innovation is palpable, yet the stark realities of climate change’s impact on our environment and daily lives are ever-present. This dual perspective fueled my passion further.

Throughout my career, I’ve held various corporate roles that honed my expertise in sustainability. The opportunity to return to Arizona was a pivotal moment for me. I’m excited to be back, fostering community engagement and collaboration among organizations committed to addressing climate challenges together.

Phoenix, as the fifth largest city in the United States, and Arizona State University (ASU), consistently ranked as the top innovator by U.S. News & World Report since 2016, clearly demonstrate Arizona’s capacity for leadership in innovation. Despite these accolades, Arizona still lags in venture capital and startup growth. To address this, we established AZ CleanTech with the goal of harnessing the abundant enthusiasm and talent in Arizona to forge a brighter, more sustainable future.

AZ CleanTech is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that is working to build a vibrant collective of innovators, investors, and industry partners dedicated to fueling Arizona’s clean technology ecosystem. Our community is growing rapidly and includes the most promising startups in the state, as well as investors and ecosystem partners, all united by a mission to accelerate the transition to a sustainable future. We aim to empower Arizona by fostering connections through collaboration, capital, and camaraderie, supporting early-stage founders, attracting investments from out-of-state, and enhancing local investor confidence in the burgeoning CleanTech industry.

Share a green success story with us – how have you helped customers or other businesses in the fight against climate change?

AZ CleanTech has experienced an enthusiastic start since we began hosting events in late 2023. Our inaugural event quickly reached full capacity, demonstrating significant interest in our mission. Since then, our list of interested parties, supporters, and sponsors has continued to grow, as have the sizes of our events. The local community’s excitement about our initiatives has been truly remarkable.

As Arizona’s first platform uniting the entire climate community, AZ CleanTech has become instrumental in connecting a diverse array of stakeholders crucial for developing solutions in this space. We’ve already witnessed inspiring outcomes such as new partnerships, collaborations, job opportunities, and business deals emerging from these gatherings. We are committed to nurturing this dynamic environment and bringing together innovative minds and resources. The potential for what lies ahead is boundless.

What would you do with $1 billion dollars?

With $1 billion, AZ CleanTech would scale its impact, creating a regional or even national hub for CleanTech startups. We are on a mission to find the most promising startups across the country and promote Arizona as a great place for them to expand. There are a tremendous amount of resources in Arizona, including an incredible talent base coming out of the numerous climate and sustainability programs at ASU.

We also want to provide crucial early-stage capital to entrepreneurs addressing climate challenges. We plan to maintain our series of free monthly events to ensure broad accessibility and draw climate tech investors to Arizona. This investment would not only aid local pioneers but also bolster Arizona’s standing in the cleantech industry, encouraging both innovation and economic growth.

What do you envision your industry looking like in ten years?

Climate change is an undeniable reality, profoundly impacting our lives, especially in Arizona. In 2023, we experienced an unprecedented heatwave, as reported by the New York Times,  with 31 consecutive days of temperatures reaching or exceeding 110°F, and many nights where it did not cool below 100°F. Even our native saguaros, typically resilient, struggled under these conditions, with many succumbing to the intense heat. This visual testament to climate change underscores the urgent need for solutions.

Over the next 10 years, I anticipate a significant surge in the CleanTech sector, driven by necessity. As we confront increasingly severe climate impacts, innovation in clean technology will become not just beneficial but essential for adaptation and resilience. This will likely catalyze rapid advancements and increased investment in the sector, aiming to mitigate environmental impacts and support sustainable development.

CleanTech is the next trillion dollar industry and startups play a crucial role in transitioning existing industries to net zero and creating a wave of new technologies needed to address the shortage of clean renewable power required to reach our ambitious goals. Most of my experience has been in leading sustainability initiatives at large publicly traded companies and we didn’t have the technological solutions required to decarbonize our existing supply chains or they were at a price point that didn’t make sense for the business. More cooperation and partnerships between corporate sustainability programs and startups is needed to bridge the solutions gap.
